Slipping Away

Though i had tried to do no harm, Saskia still remembers the arm-wrenching pain of our run across the grass. I saw Hanna standing under the tree, a look of deepest fear on her face. I touched her briefly and moved quickly toward Felix. All the parents and children from the party were standing ashen-faced in a circle around us, numb at the witnessing of the nearness of death.

Felix Greene Lilly, ten years old, avid tree climber and lover of life, was not moving; he was broken and unconscious, and bones jutted out from his crushed right thigh and broken arm. He bled from his skull.
